The short answer

On this site, total recon time means acquisition or ownership to frontline-ready; frontline-ready means recon is complete and the unit is photographed, priced, and merchandised/ready to list; in-process cycle time means the first recon or intake step to frontline-ready; and time in step means time spent in one stage. The total cannot tell you whether the time sits in approval, parts, mechanical, detail, photos, or before work starts. Time in step turns that question into something the store can measure instead of assume.

  1. Record acquisition or ownership time as the total-clock start.
  2. Record each step entry and exit with the same timestamp rules.
  3. Record frontline-ready time only after recon, photos, pricing, and merchandising are complete.
  4. Segment completed units by vehicle type, source, work required, and vendor path.

Use more than the average: compare median, 75th percentile, and 90th percentile time so a small group of long-running units does not disappear inside one mean. Then inspect the same percentiles by segment and step.

What to inspect in a cycle-time review.

Use completed-unit timestamps and consistent segments. Active-unit snapshots can explain current queues, but they should not be mixed into completed-cycle calculations.
